During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, promising “a different age” and an bold commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
