The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
