Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

PSG has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen different occasions.

The Parisian giants required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the French league winners and the French Cup winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to seize a surprise lead. Initially, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a breathtaking turn of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a vital leveler in the final seconds to force the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping decisive kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
