EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
